For more than two decades, medical device companies have been trying to harness cold to deliver effective therapies for a wide range of ailments. In the mid-1990s, for example, hypothermia companies, such as InnerCool Therapies (acquired by Philips in 2009; the assets were sold to Zoll Medical Corp. in November 2014) and Radiant Surgical (now defunct), sprang up hoping to use extreme cold to treat stroke.
