Cataract surgery is one of the highest-volume surgical procedures, with approximately 3.6 million performed in the US and more than 20 million globally each year. In the US and other developed markets, cataract surgery is typically covered by government and private insurers, including removal of the cataractous crystalline lens and implantation of an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).
