ARTICLE SUMMARY:

In this video interview, leading Wall Street medtech analyst Kyle Rose of Canaccord Genuity speaks with us about orthopedic industry trends and innovation as the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons gets underway in San Diego on August 31, one of the first major medical meetings to go live since the pandemic began.

The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) live annual meeting starting August 31 in San Diego will be an indicator of just how eager the US and the orthopedics industry in particular is to get back to normal, despite ongoing risks.

Coming during a rough third quarter, when hospitals in parts of the US are again flooded with COVID-19 cases, the meeting should provide insights into companies’ performance during the pandemic surges and positioning as they respond to ongoing, albeit fluctuating long-term trends, such as adoption of enabling technologies and acceleration of site of care shifts to the outpatient setting.

Canaccord Genuity’s senior medical technology analyst Kyle Rose says that while COVID-19 continues to impact orthopedic procedure volume and workflows, the US healthcare system is much better structured to manage through surges, making forecasting for both healthcare systems and industry more predictable and enabling better responses.

At AAOS, Rose says he will be interested in getting a sense of surgeons’ awareness of and interest in adopting enabling technologies, including the orthopedic robotic launches from Johnson & Johnson, Smith & Nephew and Zimmer Biomet. He will be looking at companies’ investment in innovation and the continuity of their new product flow, as well as how their commercial teams engage with physicians.

As for COVID-19’s impact on industry growth, he notes it is hard to predict whether the industry can exceed 2019 performance levels because of recent surges. That answer will depend on fourth-quarter trajectories.
