ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Six months after implementing a series of sweeping reimbursement policy shifts that incentivize the movement of inpatient procedures to ambulatory surgery center settings, CMS in July proposed a reversal. We spoke to Ryota Terada of Sg2 about the impact of this latest vacillation on one of the most affected specialties, orthopedics.

The orthopedics industry and healthcare providers have spent much of 2021 gearing up their responses to expansive new CMS reimbursement policies that strongly favor moving many procedures from the hospital to the ambulatory surgery center (ASC) setting.

This July, the government agency, operating under the Biden administration, has proposed reversing almost all of those changes to revert to pre-2021 norms. Following a 60-day comment period ending September 17, a final rule is expected to be announced in November and enacted beginning in 2022.
