Imaging Sector Seeks FDA Flexibility Amid COVID-19 Demands for Portable Systems

Much public attention has appropriately been directed at clearing government red tape to increase supplies of tests, ventilators, and PPE in response to the pandemic, but there has also been a surge in demand for certain medical imaging equipment, particularly of the mobile variety. Imaging firms want FDA to cut them some slack to help meet emergency needs.

It’s well known by now that a COVID-19 prognosis can turn grim when it hits the lungs, and chest X-rays and other imaging tools have been crucial to managing care for patients facing the worst of this new disease. As hospitals and public health agencies do everything they can to build out capacity to face virus surges, imaging device makers say they are feeling the push and can use some temporary help from FDA to ensure they can meet healthcare providers’ needs.
