ARTICLE SUMMARY:

The Medicare agency is on a path to potentially approve more new technology add-on payments for devices entering the hospital inpatient setting next year than it has since the NTAP program launched, even after disqualifying eight products under new eligibility requirements.

CMS disqualified eight products from New Technology Add-on Payments for FY 2025 based on new eligibility requirements, but it could still end up as a record year for device NTAP awards.

The Medicare agency published its FY 2025 hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed rule April 10, detailing eight new medical devices that have all but secured the bonus payments starting October 1, including high-profile renal denervation devices for hypertension and other cardiovascular, orthopedic, and diagnostic products. Four additional devices will be able to benefit from NTAPs if they can secure FDA authorization by May 1, and makers of yet another four devices are still working to convince CMS that they deserve the extra payments next year on clinical and cost grounds.
