Even so, competitors would be well-advised to take a page from Medtronic and keep a close eye on new innovations in this fast-moving field.

A number of clinical studies have now documented the benefits of mechanical thrombectomy (clot retrievers and aspiration devices) in carefully selected patients suffering from a large-vessel ischemic stroke, even those who present up to 24 hours after stroke onset.
