VenoStent: A Barrier Against Hemodialysis Complications

article image
ARTICLE SUMMARY:

A start-up out of Houston, TX, offers a flexible solution for a prevalent issue in vascular surgery.

Prior to founding VenoStent, CEO Tim Boire began his career of innovation at biotech firm Genzyme, where he worked in protein engineering, cell cultures, and analytical development, among other areas. Boire then joined the Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering Laboratory at Vanderbilt University, where he collaborated with a vascular surgeon to create a novel shape-memory polymer that could safely wrap around bypass grafts to prevent intimal growth and support vascular healing. Through the National Science Foundation’s I-Corps program, Boire was able to iterate the technology based on feedback from physicians in the field to hone it into its current form, a bioabsorbable wrap with finely tuned mechanical and thermal properties for hemodialysis access.
