MicroPort Orthopedics: Is This the Beginning of a Global Chinese Medtech Industry?

MicroPort Scientific’s acquisition of Wright Medical’s total joint business three years ago marks one of the first major acquisitions of a US business by a Chinese company, raising the question: Do Chinese medtech companies think or behave differently than Western companies?

Wright Medical Group Inc. was once a broad-based orthopedic company featuring a full line of joint implants, but by the mid-2000s, senior executives had begun to realize that the market for total hip and knee replacements was getting more difficult, both more competitive and more concentrated among the top three market leaders.
