Eyenovia: Precision Ophthalmic Drug Delivery

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Topical eye drops for presbyopia, glaucoma, dry eye, and other ocular disorders are inefficient and difficult for many patients to handle. If delivered in excess, some ocular drugs can increase side effects. Eyenovia’s innovative Optejet dispenser gives users a much more precise and accurate dosage in the form of a gentle spray that coats the surface of the eye.

The volume of a typical eye drop is about 35-40 microliters, more than four times the fluid retention capacity of the eye’s surface. This volume is a compromise due to the characteristics of a squeeze bottle, as a smaller aperture necessary for a smaller drop would make the eye dropper much more difficult to use, particularly for patients with arthritis, tremors, or any other deficit of hand control. Thus, the most widely used device for administering ocular drugs routinely overdoses patients.
