ExplORer Surgical: A Digital Playbook Removes Variability in the OR

Long before the pandemic, ExplORer Surgical created a cloud-based digital playbook to increase the efficiency and consistency of surgeries. Today, it serves as a tool that allows medtech companies to provide crucial surgical support, even if the dictates of COVID-19 keep device reps out of the OR and procedure suites.

When MBA student Jennifer Fried participated in an entrepreneurship program at the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business, she met Alex Langerman, MD, a head and neck surgeon with a masters inclinical and administrative data science. He’s spent much of his career addressing inefficiencies in the operating room as the former director of the Operative Performance Research Institute at the University of Chicago. He acquainted Fried with the concept of intraoperative variability, a particular source of disruption and wasted time in the surgical suite.
