Epiminder Enables Long-Term Seizure Monitoring

An Australian start-up aims to change the course of drug-resistant epilepsy care with longitudinal insights from a minimally invasive continuous electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring implant.

Founded by epileptologist Mark Cook in 2017, Melbourne, Australia-based start-up Epiminder is working to make epilepsy monitoring more objective over the long term by using longitudinal data to help patients reach the most appropriate therapy. The impact of his father developing epilepsy in mid-life ignited Cook’s passion to transform care for the disease, leading him to work with the Bionics Institute, where the first cochlear implant was created, and to leverage some of that technological architecture to explore sub-scalp implantable devices for continuous monitoring of brain activity. Through a collaboration between The Bionics Institute, the device company Cochlear Ltd., Melbourne University, and St. Vincent’s Hospital, Epiminder as a company took form.
