Cala Health: Medtech as Bioelectric Medicine

Wearables are a hot topic in medtech circles today. But are they really medtech? Cala Health’s Trio device for treating essential tremors underscores the challenges and opportunities that wearables represent when compared to traditional medical devices.

Five years ago, Kate Rosenbluth, PhD, was wandering the halls of Stanford Hospitals and Clinics as a Stanford Biodesign fellow, in search of an idea for a project. “I essentially shadowed any physician, nurse, home care specialist, back-office billing person, willing to spend time with me,” she recalls. As she followed folks around, Rosenbluth was struck by patients with a movement disorder called essential tremor (ET).
