The number of small, privately-held companies located and created in the US still dwarfs the number located and created elsewhere around the world, and there’s very likely something of a virtuous cycle at work here, given that much of the global medtech industry is headquartered in the US. Other geographies are trying to redress that imbalance; over the past 15 years or so, Ireland and Israel have both established robust medtech clusters.
One of the most interesting things about the medical device industry is how US-centric it is. Forget about moves like Medtronic/Covidien’s to establish headquarters in Ireland; for the most part, the vast critical mass of operational headquarters in medtech is located in the United States.
