ARTICLE SUMMARY:

Presentations at the recent Paris Course on Revascularization caused our Editor-in-Chief to ruminate about the future validity of the “first-mover advantage,” particularly in light of customer consolidation and the equal weight of economics and outcomes in the product selection analysis.

I started my career in the hospital supply industry—which is what the medical device industry was called before the technology explosion of the 1990s—and it was one of the articles of faith in that industry that large suppliers always wanted to be number-one or number-two in their product segments.
