New Chinese Medtech Regs Offer New Opportunities

China continues its recent trend of reforming its regulatory system to make it more attractive for Western companies to introduce innovative technologies to the Chinese market. This presents a window, particularly for small to mid-sized companies, to access what historically has been a difficult market to crack.

Over the past few months, China has issued a series of new regulations and standards for medical devices through its National Medical Products Administration (NMPA), the country’s medtech regulatory body. These changes, broadly speaking, reflect the overall trend toward focusing primarily on internal growth and development and less on expanding China’s economic footprint worldwide. This recent trend appears to offer greater opportunities for non-Chinese device companies to more easily introduce innovative products to the Chinese market.
