Navigating the New DC: The Women’s Health PAC Reimbursement Priorities

ARTICLE SUMMARY:

The founders of the Women’s Health PAC and its sister organization, the Women’s Health Collective, say they are the first to advocate holistically for better women’s health reimbursement, including more representation on the AMA RUC Committee, which plays an important role in assigning value to healthcare services in the US.

Finding a sustainable women’s health business model has been enormously challenging, impeding start-up company innovation and formation. A bipartisan women’s health political action committee (PAC), founded in May 2024, is determined to attack this problem at its roots, by funding candidates who prioritize women’s health, in particular those who advocate for removing regulatory and reimbursement barriers to profitability and long-term viability. “We talk a lot about research dollars that are going into women’s health, and sure, we need more of that, but a self-sustaining revenue model is critical, and reimbursement reform is the biggest roadblock to improving access to and effectiveness of women’s health, says Jodi Neuhauser, a co-founder of the Women’s Health PAC (WHPAC), which claims to be the first PAC dedicated to holistically promoting the field. The PAC raised $250,000 in eight months to support 16 candidates for Congress in the 2024 elections, of whom 12 won. Earlier this year, it merged with Doctors for Fertility, a much smaller, three-year-old PAC founded by six physicians to make IVF care safe and accessible.
