ARTICLE SUMMARY:

A Medicare official said on Capitol Hill today that CMS will propose revisions to its National Coverage Determination process next year to improve clarity around decisions about which technologies should be considered for coverage. Meanwhile, the agency is hoping to finalize its Transitional Coverage for Emerging Technologies (TCET) plan this year, while lawmakers try to press ahead with MCIT replacement legislation.

The Medicare agency will be seeking public comments next year on a proposal to improve clarity about how the agency determines what types of technology should undergo National Coverage Determination (NCD) review.

“CMS is developing a revised approach to NCDs that we believe will provide greater transparency, consistency, and predictability to our decisions about which items and services should be considered for coverage at the national level,” Dora Hughes, MD, CMS’ new chief medical officer and director of the Center for Clinical Standards and Quality, said during a congressional hearing September 19.
