On its way to awarding the first new-technology add-on payment (NTAP) to an artificial intelligence software tool, CMS almost blocked AI as a category from eligibility to the coveted payment program. The agency’s change of heart in its final decision is positive for future AI reimbursement prospects, but CMS made sure to signal that it still had a lot of lingering questions about AI and its proper place in the Medicare scheme.
