CDRH is building an AR/VR-enabled home prototype. Excerpted from Pathways’ Picks April 24: EU Eyes Transition, CDRH Builds a Home, Medicare Picks, and More.
FDA’s device center has contracted with an architectural firm to construct an Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality (AR/VR)-enabled home prototype to “help reimagine the home environment as an integral part of the health care system, with the goal of advancing health equity for all people in the US.”CDRH announced the Home as a Health Care Hub April 23 and it expects the building to be completed later this year. Specifically, the hub will target diabetes as an example health condition. FDA didn’t specify the size, number, or location of homes, but stated that the planned prototype will begin “with dwellings in rural locations and lower-income communities” to advancing health equity. The agency had signaled plans for this hub last week in its 2024 CDRH Innovation Report, where it also promised to further modernize premarket reviews and co-locate TPLC Advisory Program (TAP) advisors in medtech geographical hotspots.
