ARTICLE SUMMARY:

The leader in the field of temporary heart pumps may have its first true challenger in an Israel-originated start-up.

Magenta Medical has been on MedTech Strategist’s radar for several years, and it is one of the most advanced innovators in the mechanical circulatory support (MCS) space with two major indications for its percutaneous left ventricle assistance device (pLVAD), a type of motorized heart pump, called Elevate. (See “Magenta Medical Aims to Elevate pLVAD Space,” MedTech Strategist, July 11, 2024.) Systems like Elevate are used in patients with acute ventricular dysfunction in the context of coronary artery disease, which may be treatable with a high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention (HR-PCI). HR-PCI is typically an elective procedure wherein an interventional cardiologist uses a stent or balloon to treat obstructive lesions and remove calcified plaque from the coronary artery. During the procedure, a pLVAD is placed across the aortic valve as a prophylactic measure to stabilize the patient’s blood pressure for the duration of the procedure and removed within a few hours of placement.
