ARTICLE SUMMARY:

LifeSignals was founded to develop an advanced remote biosensor platform for the healthcare industry. Its first products targeted the cardiovascular market, but when the coronavirus pandemic hit, it quickly adapted its software and apps for COVID-19 monitoring. Part five of our series on remote patient monitoring.

Headquartered in Fremont, CA, LifeSignals was founded in 2008 by a tech-savvy team with a vision to develop an advanced biosensor platform for the healthcare industry that would untether patients in all situations, according to company co-founder and CEO Surendar Magar.

After a deep-dive into the healthcare vital signs market, “we were convinced we needed to develop a breakthrough semiconductor platform that is purpose-built—a single-chip solution with everything integrated that would enable us to design all kinds of biosensor solutions,” Magar explains. No one had done that yet for the healthcare industry, he says, noting that off-the-shelf chips wouldn’t work in busy medical environments because they have very limited applications, and Bluetooth and WiFi technologies are power-hungry and thus bandwidth-limited and unable to deal with the multiparameter systems that would be required.
