A noninvasive, high-resolution optoacoustic technique is a promising alternative to currently used invasive methods of brain oxygenation monitoring.

Controlling cerebral venous oxygenation (oxyhemoglobin saturation) is critically important for patients with severe traumatic brain injury, as well as for patients undergoing cardiac surgery.
