It’s been a busy and challenging couple of years for diabetes technology companies. Although they appear to have weathered the COVID storm well and the overall market is now growing at double-digit rates, the diabetes device market, like most other medical device markets, faced fewer in-person patient visits at the height of the pandemic, which impacted the number of new patients starting on insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) devices. Moreover, clinical trial challenges and a pandemic-driven backlog at the FDA slowed new device approvals, a headwind that is just now beginning to abate.
