ARTICLE SUMMARY:

CMS has established a new national payment for reimbursement of Pelvalon’s novel device.

Pelvic floor disorders are the bane of women’s existence. These conditions, which include urinary incontinence, fecal incontinence, and pelvic organ prolapse, arise from any situation that puts pressure on the pelvic floor, with childbirth being the principal cause. Other causes included heavy lifting, trauma, surgery, obesity, or simply genetics. Pelvic floor disorders are quite common, with an overall prevalence of 25%, and a higher prevalence as women age; they affect 40% of women aged 60-79 (according to a study funded by the NIH). By age 80, fully half of all women suffer the disadvantages that come with pelvic floor weakness, which can include sexual problems, social isolation, depression and anxiety, poor self-image, and avoidance of exercise or other activities. In short, pelvic disorders are more than an inconvenience; they’re chronic conditions that detract from health and wellbeing in many ways.
